Long-term health outcomes following percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement.
The impact of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement on long-term health status in patients with impaired swallow function is not known. We sought to characterize the long-term impact of PEG on patient health status and survival in a population of patients with impaired swallow function. This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with impaired swallow function who received PEG tube placement between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2008. Patients were identified in the University of Michigan Health System Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey Short Form 36 (SF-36) was used to assess health status. Survival was evaluated by a Kaplan-Meier analysis. In total, 125 patients underwent PEG tube placement with follow-up of 9.2 ± 4.6 years. The median 70238732e0 hermjann
